What Is Penpoint?
Penpoint is a desktop app where fiction writers write their manuscript and organize their entire fictional world in one place.
Writers juggle Word for drafting, spreadsheets for characters, Notion for worldbuilding, and a whiteboard for timelines. Every time they need to check a detail, they leave their writing and lose their train of thought. Penpoint puts the manuscript editor, character profiles, relationship maps, arcs, locations, and search all in one place.
Standout Features
Chapter Scanner
Import a manuscript from Word, EPUB, RTF, Markdown, or plain text. Right-click a chapter and choose Scan Chapter for Content. Penpoint finds the characters, locations, and items in the prose and lists them by confidence. Review the matches and apply the ones you want; each one is linked to the chapter it came from. Scanning never changes the prose, and it reads English text only for now.
Glorious Searchbar
Press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) to search your manuscript, characters, locations, and notes at once, then jump straight to what you found.
Manuscript Editor
Clean editor with scene management, chapter groups, and drafts and versions. The spellchecker works offline in 60 languages (English is built in; the other 59 download once) and learns every character, location, and item name you create, so invented names are not flagged. Import from Word, EPUB, RTF, Markdown, or plain text. Export to any of those plus PDF.
Visual Worldbuilding
Relationship maps, story arc visualizers, character fortune curves, nested locations, timelines, and tags. Customizable character profiles with blocks you add or remove. Everything is cross-referenced and searchable.
Flowstate
A forward-only writing mode where sentences lock behind you as you write. Timed sprints with alternating writing and editing windows. Designed for writers who keep rewriting instead of moving forward.
Local by Default
Books are files on the writer's own drive. Writing needs no account and no connection, and no AI touches the prose. Automatic local backups run as you write, with an optional second backup folder you can point at your own cloud drive. Penpoint Cloud is an optional paid subscription for backup and sync between your own devices; turning it off changes nothing about your files.
Series
Turn a book into Book 1 of a Series and keep going: several books in one file, with one shared cast, set of locations, and item list. Each book keeps its own manuscript, chapters, and arcs, and Series Arcs plot the threads that span all of them. The conversion keeps what you have written and can be reversed.
Platforms and Trial
Native on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux, shipped as an AppImage and a .deb. One $40 license covers all three. The free trial runs 14 days with every feature unlocked, and needs no account and no credit card. A mobile companion app entered beta in July 2026; it is not on the public app stores and needs a Penpoint Cloud subscription.
How It Compares
- vs. Scrivener ($59.99 per platform): Scrivener organizes a manuscript well and has an iPhone and iPad app. It has nothing built for tracking characters or story arcs. Penpoint covers both sides for $40, and one license covers Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- vs. Campfire ($19 a month, or $420 once for all 18 modules): Campfire comes closest to Penpoint on worldbuilding, has a free tier, and runs on web, desktop, and mobile. Its manuscript editor is basic and your writing lives on its servers. Penpoint pairs a full manuscript editor with worldbuilding for $40.
- vs. Dabble ($19, $29, or $49 a month, or $699 once): Dabble has real-time co-authoring and track changes; Penpoint is a single-writer app. Dabble has no relationship map, timeline, calendar, or item tracking, which Penpoint does. One beta tester switching from Dabble said Penpoint "out-featured it."
- vs. World Anvil ($7 a month or $54 a year for the first tier with a manuscript editor; $650 or $1,350 once for the lifetime tiers): World Anvil is web-only and built for tabletop-style worldbuilding, and its templates and maps are stronger. Its manuscript editor is basic and exports as a web file. Penpoint is a desktop app with a full manuscript editor.
- vs. Ellipsus (free, or $99 once for Plus): Ellipsus runs in any browser, has real-time co-writing, and its free plan has no document limit. It does not aim at worldbuilding and needs a live connection. Penpoint works offline and keeps characters, places, and timelines as linked entries.
