Block Types

Blocks are the individual sections on your character sheet: things like text areas, number fields, and trait lists. Each block type serves a different purpose, from simple text fields to complex relationship mapping.

Your layout (the arrangement of sections on every character's page) applies to all characters in your book. When you add a number block and name it "Height", every character gets a height field; each character has their own unique value. Changing your layout doesn't delete any information you've already entered. You can add new blocks at any time, and all your characters will retroactively get the new block applied to their character sheet. You'll just have to go back through and update them with the new content.

Tip: Focus on blocks that help you write better characters. You don't need to track everything - just what matters for your story.

Basic Blocks

General-purpose fields you can add multiple times to your layout:

Character Data Blocks

Specialized blocks that connect to other parts of your book. Most of these you can only add one per character sheet:

  • Trait Block - A list you can pick from, based on the traits you've set up for your book (can add multiple)
  • Tags Block - Labels you can attach to characters to group and organize them (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Relationships Block - Character-to-character connections (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Items Block - Track items/objects owned (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Locations Block - Link characters to places (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Chapters Block - Track chapter appearances (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Events Block - Key moments this character is part of, that also appear on the items and locations involved (you can only add one per character sheet)
  • Character Arc Block - A visual chart showing how a character's fortune rises and falls through the story (you can only add one per character sheet)

View Mode vs Edit Mode

Blocks display differently depending on your current mode:

  • View Mode: Clean, readable format where links to related characters, locations, items, and chapters are clickable
  • Edit Mode: Editable forms with input fields that auto-save as you type, so you never have to worry about losing your work
