Views and Sorting

The Notebook (Penpoint's notes section) offers multiple ways to display and organize your content. Each folder can have its own view mode and sort order, so you can tailor the layout to fit what's inside.

The Hatter opened his eyes very wide, but all he said was "Why is a raven like a writing-desk?"

Figure 1.1 - The three view modes: Cards, Large Cards, and List

Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the toolbar above your notes to switch between three view modes:

  • Cards: The default. Items display as cards in a grid that adjusts to fit your screen, showing titles, content previews, color accents (a colored left edge you can assign to notes), and tags.
  • Large Cards: Wider cards with more content visible. Best when you want to read more of each note without opening it.
  • List: Compact horizontal rows with title, tag indicators (small colored squares representing tags), and the date modified. The most space-efficient view for quickly scanning by name.

Tip: Each folder remembers its own view mode, so you can use Cards for one folder and List for another.

Sorting

Click the Sort button (the up-down arrow icon) in the toolbar above your notes to change how items are ordered:

  • Manual: The default. You control the order by dragging items to rearrange them.
  • Name: Alphabetical order
  • Date created: By when items were first created
  • Date modified: By when items were last changed
  • Type: Groups items by kind: folders first, then notes, images, and shortcuts (quick links to other parts of your book)

For any sort method except Manual, you can switch between ascending and descending order (A to Z vs. Z to A, or newest-first vs. oldest-first).

Note: Drag-and-drop reordering only works when the sort is set to Manual: click and hold an item, then drag it to a new position. With other sort methods, the order is determined automatically.

Selecting Multiple Items

You can select multiple items to move, archive, or delete them together:

  • Ctrl+click (Cmd+click on Mac): Add or remove individual items from the selection
  • Shift+click: Select a range of items from the last clicked item to the current one
  • Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac): Select all items in the current folder

Selecting items doesn't change or remove anything on its own; it just highlights them so you can choose what to do next.

Once you have multiple items selected, right-click (or Ctrl+click on Mac) to see options including:

  • Move to Folder...: Moves the selected items to a different folder. You can reverse this by moving them back.
  • Archive (for notes): Tucks them out of sight without deleting. You can show archived notes again using the "Show Archived" option in the gear menu.
  • Delete: Removes the selected items (you'll always be asked to confirm first).

Note: On Mac, Ctrl+click opens the right-click menu, while Cmd+click adds items to your selection. Both shortcuts use the Ctrl key label, but they do different things: use Cmd for selecting, Ctrl for the menu.
