Comments & Pinned Notes

Comments are notes to yourself, pinned in the page margin beside the exact text they're about: revision reminders, pacing questions, anything to flag without touching the prose. They never appear in your exported manuscript.

Select text, then:

  • Right-click (or Ctrl+click on Mac) and choose Add Comment
  • Click the speech-bubble button in the toolbar above your writing area
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+M (Cmd+Alt+M on Mac)

A card opens in the margin; type your note and save. Clicking the highlighted text or the card brings it to the front. A comment can't stretch across a scene divider or chapter heading, since each side belongs to a different scene.

Working With a Comment

Each card's three-dot menu offers Edit comment, Resolve, and Delete. Double-click the text to edit, or click Add more… for a follow-up line.

Resolving clears a comment from the margin without deleting anything; find and reopen it from the Comments View menu (below). Deleting removes the comment and its highlight for good; by default Penpoint asks you to confirm first.

When a page has comments, a speech-bubble button at the top right shows how many are open. Its menu lets you:

  • Filter to Open (the default), Resolved, or All comments
  • Hide comments, shrinking every card to a small dot; hover to preview, click to open the full card
  • Turn Ask before deleting on or off (with this off, Delete removes a comment immediately, with no confirmation step)

A narrow window shrinks comments to the same small dots automatically. Fullscreen writing and Flowstate (the timed, distraction-free writing mode) hide comments entirely.

Pinning a Note

You can also pin a note from your Notebook to a line of prose: select text, right-click (or Ctrl+click on Mac), choose Pin a Note…, then pick the note. The margin card shows a live preview with an Open in Notebook button.

The note itself gains a Pinned in manuscript list of every spot it's pinned; clicking an entry jumps you back there.

Note: Pasting commented text elsewhere in your manuscript carries the comment along; both spots share the same comment, so editing, resolving, or deleting from either updates both.

Tip: Comments are preserved read-only in manuscript snapshots and scene drafts, so old versions keep their margin notes.
