Notebook

The Notebook is your personal writing workspace: a place for quick thoughts, reference images, task lists, and links to your characters and locations. It's organized like a file system with folders, so everything stays where you put it.

Layout

The Notebook has three sections side by side:

  • Folder list (left): A sidebar on the left showing all your folders. The top level is called the "Binder": it's the main folder that holds everything.
  • Contents (center): Displays the notes, images, shortcuts, and subfolders inside the selected folder.
  • Editor panel (right): Opens when you click a note or image, showing the full editor or image viewer.

All three sections are resizable by dragging the dividers between them. The folder list can be collapsed to a thin strip when you need more space.

What You Can Store

  • Notes — Rich text with colors, tags, checkboxes, and @Mentions (type @ to link to a character, location, or other item in your book)
  • Folders: Organize notes into nested groups (up to 5 levels deep)
  • Smart Folders: Create a folder tied to a tag (like "Research" or "Chapter 3"), and every note with that tag shows up here automatically
  • Images: Upload reference photos, maps, or inspiration with names and descriptions
  • Shortcuts: Bookmarks that link to characters, locations, items, chapters, and other parts of your book

Tip: Your notes don't have to stay in the Notebook. With a Notebook Block you can show a note, a whole folder, or a set of tagged notes right on a character sheet or a scene, updated live as you write. Great for keeping a character's backstory or a scene's research in view while you work.

Tip: Right-click (or Ctrl+click on Mac) anywhere in the Notebook to see what you can create in that spot. The toolbar at the top also has buttons for adding notes, folders, images, and shortcuts.
