Chapter Block Types

Blocks are the small sections (date fields, character lists, notes, etc.) that make up the chapter view. Chapters use the same block system as character sheets: every section in a chapter's detail view is a block, like a paragraph field, a date picker, or a list of characters who appear in the scene. Mix and match blocks to build a chapter layout that matches how you actually plan your story.

Your chapter layout applies to every chapter and scene in your book: add a Paragraph block called "Summary" once, and every scene gets its own Summary field. Configure the layout in Settings > Chapter Layout.

Tip: You don't need every block type. Start with what helps you plan: a calendar for keeping dates straight, a characters block for tracking who's in each scene, and a paragraph or two for notes is plenty for most writers.

Basic

General-purpose fields shared with character sheets. You can add multiples of these to your layout:

  • Text Block - Single-line text input (the same Text Block used on character sheets)
  • Paragraph Block - Multi-line rich text for summaries, notes, and longer prose
  • Number Block - Numeric input with optional minimum, maximum, and step
  • Divider Block - A visual separator to break a layout into sections
  • Calculate Block - Adds, subtracts, or combines numbers from your other Number blocks
  • Image Block - Attach a reference image to each scene (maps, location concept art, mood boards)
  • Notebook Block - Show a note, folder, or set of tags from your Notebook right on a scene

Chapter Data

Chapter-specific blocks that connect a scene to the rest of your book. You can only add one of each:

  • Tags Block - Assign tags to a chapter or scene (works on both character sheets and chapters)
  • Calendar Block - Assign in-world dates and times to scenes
  • Assigning Things to Scenes - Covers the Characters, Locations, Items, and Story Arcs blocks — the four ways to mark which entities show up in a scene

To add or remove any of these from your chapter layout, see Customizing Chapter Layout.
