Converting a Book to a Series
Finished (or well into) a book and realized the story needs more volumes? Converting turns your existing book into Book 1 of a brand-new series, with everything you've built coming along for the ride.
Starting the Conversion
Head to the Book Library and find your book's card.
Click the three-dot menu (⋮) on the card (or right-click the card; Control-click on Mac) and choose Convert to Series…. Give the series a name ("The Sherlock Holmes Saga", say), add an optional description, and click Convert to Series.
You can change your mind later. A series can be split back into separate books, each becoming its own independent book file. See Splitting a Series into Separate Books.
Your Book Is Safe: Here's What Changes
Nothing is deleted. Your book simply becomes the first volume of something bigger:
- Your book becomes Book 1 of the new series, keeping all its chapters, scenes, and manuscript exactly as they were.
- Every character, item, and location gets Presence in Book 1 (Presence = which Books a character, item, or location appears in), ready to be shared with the Books you add next.
- Your Story Arcs become Book 1's Story Arcs, and the Arcs page gains room for Series Arcs that span the whole saga.
Presence and Series Arcs each have their own guides: see Presence: Which Books a Character Is In and Book Arcs and Series Arcs.
Tip: Right after converting, the library takes you to the series' own shelf. The natural next step is the "Add Book to Series" card, where Book 2 begins. Already have the next volume as its own book? Bring it in with "Add to Series…" from the Library.
Ever want to go the other way? Splitting a Series into Separate Books covers turning a series back into standalone books.
