Tracking Your Time
Penpoint includes a clock and a writing timer built into the header bar. The clock keeps you aware of the time while you write, and the timer lets you track how long your writing sessions last.
The Clock
The clock appears in the top-right corner of the bar at the top of the screen. Click it to open a dropdown (a small menu that appears below the clock) where you can quickly adjust settings or start the writing timer.
From the menu you can:
- Switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format
- Show or hide seconds on the clock
- Hide the clock to collapse it to a small clock icon in the top-right corner (click that icon to bring the full clock back)
You can also configure these options in Settings > Interface.
The Writing Timer
The writing timer is a simple stopwatch. Start it when you sit down to write and stop it when you're done: your writing time is automatically saved to your daily stats.
To start the timer, click the clock at the top of the screen and choose Start Timer. Once running, the elapsed time appears at the top alongside the clock. Click it again for options to pause, resume, or stop the timer. When you stop, your writing time is saved automatically. You can also choose whether the timer displays alongside the clock or temporarily shows the timer instead of the clock; your clock comes right back when you stop the timer. These options appear in the menu while the timer is active.
Tip: Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T (Cmd+T on Mac) to quickly start, pause, or resume the timer without opening the menu.
Auto-Start and Auto-Pause
If you enable Auto-start on typing in the clock menu, the timer will begin automatically when you start typing anywhere you can type: manuscripts, notes, character descriptions, and more. No need to remember to click Start.
The timer also pauses and resumes automatically in two situations:
- You switch away from Penpoint: If you click on another app, the timer pauses. It resumes when you come back.
- Idle timeout: If auto-start is enabled and you stop typing for a while, the timer pauses until you start typing again.
Note: The timer works in both Worldbuilding Mode (where you track characters and story details) and Manuscript Mode (where you write your prose), including during Flowstate sessions (distraction-free timed writing sprints).
