Edit mode lets you modify all aspects of an item's information. Press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on Mac) or click the Edit button in the detail panel header to enter edit mode.

Auto-Save

All changes save automatically as you type. No need to click a Save button; your edits are preserved instantly. You can see save progress in the top bar of the application.

Editing Name

Click into the name field to edit the item's name. You can use up to 50 characters. A character counter appears below the field once you pass 25 characters.

Profile Picture

Click the placeholder next to the item name to upload a profile picture, then crop it to fit. You can also drag and drop an image directly. Hover over an existing picture to see options for changing or removing it.

Changing Type

Use the Type dropdown to change the item's type. Select from any of your configured item types.

Changing Importance

Use the importance dropdown to set the item's priority level: Primary, Secondary, or Background. Changes apply immediately.

Single Character Restriction

Enable the Single Character checkbox (with lock icon) to restrict this item to only one character at a time. Useful for unique items like legendary weapons or one-of-a-kind artifacts that can't be shared.

When enabled, you'll see a yellow lock icon warning if a character is already assigned, and you won't be able to add additional characters until the first one is removed.

Tip: Use single-character restriction for items that are central to character development or plot progression, ensuring they can't accidentally be assigned to multiple characters.

Editing Description

The description field is a full rich text editor supporting markdown formatting. You can add bold, italics, lists, and more to format your item's description.

Use the @ symbol to create mentions that link to characters, other items, locations, or chapters. Start typing after @ to see available options.

The rich text editor works the same as the Paragraph Block. See Paragraph Block for formatting details and @Mentions for everything you can link to.

Managing Characters

In edit mode, you can add or remove characters. Click the Add Character button to assign the item to a character. A dropdown appears with all available characters; start typing to filter the list.

Below each character, you can type a short relationship note describing how they connect to the item, for example, "created it," "guards it," or "inherited from grandmother." Notes are limited to 100 characters and appear in italics in View mode.

To remove a character, click the trash icon next to their name. The item will be unassigned from that character immediately.

If the item has single-character restriction enabled and already has a character, the Add button will be disabled until you remove the existing character.

Managing Chapters

In edit mode, you can assign this item to chapters where it appears. Click the Add to Chapter button to search for and select a chapter. To remove an assignment, click the trash icon next to the chapter.

Managing Locations

In edit mode, you can assign this item to locations where it's found. Click the Add to Location button to search for and select a location. To remove an assignment, click the trash icon next to the location.

Managing Tags

In edit mode, you can add and remove tags by clicking on the tags section. Tags help you categorize items and filter them across your project.

For more information about creating and managing tags, see Managing Tags.

Deleting Items

At the bottom of the edit panel, you'll find the Delete Item button. Click it to permanently remove the item from your project.

Note: Deleting an item is permanent and cannot be undone. A confirmation dialog will show you what will be deleted before you confirm.

Exiting Edit Mode

Press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on Mac) or click the View button in the header to exit edit mode. You'll see your latest changes reflected immediately in view mode.
