Book Language
Writing one book in French and another in English? Give each book its own spellcheck language and autocorrect style, so you never have to change settings when you switch books. You'll find it in Settings > Book Language, under Book Settings.
Turning It On
Open the book, go to Settings, and choose Book Language. Turn on "Use separate language settings for this book." Penpoint starts from the settings you already use, so nothing changes until you pick something different.
Turn it off again and the book goes back to your usual settings. Penpoint remembers the book's choices, so turning it back on later picks up where you left off.
What It Covers
- Language: the dictionary spellcheck uses for this book
- Smart quotes: on or off, and which quote marks you write with
- Dash behavior: what typing two or three hyphens turns into
- Auto-capitalize sentences: on or off
These apply everywhere you type while the book is open: your manuscript, your notes, and the fields on your character, location, and item pages. Turning spellcheck on or off for every book still happens in Settings > Spellcheck & Autocorrect.
Tip: While a book uses its own language settings, the Spellcheck & Autocorrect page shows a reminder at the top. The language, quotes, and dashes you set there apply to your other books.
Series
In a series, the setting covers the whole series: every book inside it uses the same language. If you move or copy a book into a series, it follows the series' setting.
Japanese, Chinese, and Korean
Choose Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), or Korean and Penpoint also picks matching fonts for those characters. Serif fonts like Source Serif 4 and EB Garamond pair with a Mincho (Song or Myeongjo) style, and the other fonts pair with a Gothic style. Penpoint uses the fonts already installed on your computer. If a Mincho font isn't installed, the text uses a Gothic font instead.
Penpoint doesn't have spellcheck for Japanese or Chinese, so spellcheck is off for a book set to either one. Spellcheck also skips Japanese, Chinese, and Thai text in every book, so a few words of Japanese in an English story won't get red underlines.
On Your Other Devices
The setting is saved inside the book, so it travels with it through Penpoint Cloud. If the book's language needs a dictionary your other computer doesn't have yet, Penpoint downloads it the first time you open the book there. Spellcheck for that book stays off until the download finishes.
Note: Downloading a dictionary needs an internet connection. If it can't finish, the Book Language page shows a Retry button.
