Compendium
The Compendium is an alphabetical index of everything in your book: all characters, items, locations, chapters, and arcs in one unified list. It's perfect for quickly checking if you've already named something, finding a character you created months ago, or getting an overview of your entire story world.
What's Included
The Compendium automatically includes all entities from your book, organized alphabetically by name. Each entry displays relevant details in a compact format:
- Characters: Shows importance, traits, and custom fields
- Items: Displays type, importance, description, and first appearance
- Locations: Includes type, importance, and description
- Chapters: Lists chapter number, type, summary, and associated characters
- Story Arcs: Shows arc type, description, and key plot points
- Character Arcs: Shows arc description and keyframe progression
Tip: Articles like "The" and "A" are ignored when sorting alphabetically. "The Hall of Doors" appears under "H", not "T".
Note: Notes are not included in the Compendium as they are not considered part of your story's canon.
Alphabet Navigation
The left sidebar shows all 26 letters plus a "#" symbol for entries starting with numbers. Letters that contain entries are highlighted and clickable: click any active letter to jump directly to that section.
Grayed-out letters indicate no entries exist for that letter in your current book.
Clicking Entries
Click any entity name to navigate directly to that character, item, location, chapter, or arc. This makes the Compendium a quick reference tool for finding and accessing any element of your story.
Export to Markdown
Use the Export to Markdown button in the top-right corner to save your entire Compendium as a formatted Markdown file. This creates a portable reference document you can view outside Penpoint or share with others.
Note: Compendium exports are one-way only: you cannot modify an exported Compendium file and reimport it back into Penpoint.
If you need to export your book for editing and reimporting, see Importing & Exporting for full import/export options.
