View Mode vs Edit Mode

The Characters page has two modes: View Mode for reading character information, and Edit Mode for making changes. Switch between them using the button at the top-right of the character page, with automatic saving.

Tip: Press Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on Mac) to switch between View and Edit modes. You can also right-click on the character detail panel to toggle between them.

View Mode

View Mode displays character information in a clean, readable format optimized for quick reference.

  • A clean layout for reading — you can't accidentally change anything here
  • Clickable links for Tags, relationships, Items, Locations, and Chapters

Tip: Use View Mode as your default. It's ideal for referencing characters while writing and prevents accidental changes.

Edit Mode

Edit Mode provides text boxes and dropdown menus for modifying character details. All changes save automatically.

  • Text fields save shortly after you stop typing
  • Dropdowns and buttons save immediately
  • No manual save button needed

Switching Between Characters

Your selected mode stays active as you switch between characters. If you're in Edit Mode and select a different character, that character also opens in Edit Mode, so you do not have to switch it again for each one.
