Your Series in the Library

In your Library, a series appears as a single stacked card. Clicking it doesn't open a Book directly; it opens the series' own shelf, where each Book has its own card. This shelf is your series' home base: add Books, reorder them, give each one its own cover. Back to Library returns you to the main Library.

Each Book gets its own card, and you can customize every one with its own cover, color, and description to give each volume a distinct look. Click a card to open that Book. The faded outline card at the end, Add Book to Series, creates a brand-new Book in the series.

Managing a Book

Edit Book Details…
Duplicate Book
Move Forward
Move Backward
Delete Book…
Figure 2 - A Book card's management menu

Right-click any Book card (or Control-click on Mac), or click the small ⋮ button in the card's top-right corner, for its menu: Edit Book Details… (name, cover, color), Duplicate Book, Move Forward and Move Backward to reorder the series, and Delete Book….

Deleting a Book permanently removes the Book and its chapters, scenes, folders, and Story Arcs: the writing inside it is gone, and this can't be undone. Penpoint always shows a confirmation dialog first, so a stray click can never delete a Book on its own. The dialog also asks what to do with characters, items, and locations that only exist in that Book: Reassign to another Book keeps them in the series, or Delete them with the Book removes them permanently (again, only after you confirm). Anything shared with other Books simply stays where it is. Delete is only offered while the series has more than one Book; to unwind the last Book, split the series instead, which turns it into a standalone book.

Series Options

The ⋮ Series options button at the right end of the shelf header holds options for the whole series: "Edit Series Details…" lets you change the series' name and description, and "Split into separate books…" breaks the series apart into separate standalone books in your Library. Splitting is permanent, so read Splitting a Series into Separate Books before using it.

Bringing an Existing Book In

You can also fold a standalone book you already have into the series, so a book you wrote before you knew it was a series can join the others. This one starts from the main Library, not the series shelf: right-click (or Control-click on Mac) the standalone book's card, or use its ⋮ menu, and choose Add to Series…. Pick which series to add it to, name the Book inside the series, and choose what to bring over.

You'll first choose whether to copy or move the book:

  • Copy keeps the original standalone book in your Library and adds it into the series too, so you have it in both places.
  • Move adds it to the series, then removes the original standalone book (and its saved backups) from your Library, so it lives only in the series. Moving can't be undone, so Penpoint confirms first; any external or cloud backups you set up separately are kept.

Merging Duplicates

Review Duplicates

Matched names merge into the character, location, or item the series already has: one entry, in both books, with its chapter assignments and tags combined.

4 duplicates found: 3 characters, 1 location

Characters
Sherlock Holmes— will merge with Sherlock Holmes already in the series
Dr. Watson— will merge with Dr. Watson already in the series
The Woman— will merge with Irene Adler already in the series
Inspector Bradstreet— will be added to your series
Locations
221B Baker Street— will merge with 221B Baker Street already in the series

Tags with matching names are merged automatically.

Chapters, tags, and any blank details combine automatically. But when a character, place, or item has different text in each book, Penpoint needs to know how to handle it:

Keep both by appending (recommended)This book’s text is added below the version in your series, with a dividing line, so you can blend them yourself later.
Keep your series’ text onlyThe text already in your series stays as it is. Any conflicting text from this book is left out.

Either way, things like a name, type, or number can’t be blended into one value, so your series’ version always wins there. You’ll see exactly what didn’t carry over on the summary screen once this finishes.

Figure 3 - The Review Duplicates step: matched entries merge, new ones can be linked by hand

If the incoming book shares characters, locations, or items with the series (the same protagonist in every volume, say), Penpoint spots them by name before anything is added and shows them on a Review Duplicates step. Checked matches merge: instead of a second copy, the incoming book's chapter assignments, scene links, tags, and trait choices all land on the entity the series already has, and that one entry simply appears in both Books. Uncheck a match to bring it in as a separate copy instead. Tags with matching names merge automatically.

Renamed someone between books? Use the link button on a "new" row to point it at the right series entry by hand: Luke in the old book can merge into Lucian in the series.

For merged entries, most things combine on their own: chapters, tags, and any field one book left blank. Where the same entry has different text in each book, the default keeps both: the incoming book's wording is stacked under a divider on the series entry, and you can blend the two by hand later. Prefer a tidier result? Switch to Keep your series' text only and the series wording stays as it is, leaving out the incoming book's conflicting text. Each Book still keeps its own arcs, events, and notes.

A few details can't be blended into one value no matter which option you pick: a name, a type, or a number or calculation field always keeps the series' version on a conflict. Importance is the one exception that resolves itself: merging always keeps whichever level is higher, so a character promoted to Primary in the new book stays Primary.

Book Copied into Series

The Sign of Four is now part of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The original book is still in your library. 2 duplicates were merged with the versions the series already had.

2 details couldn’t be blended

A name, type, or number can’t be combined the way text can, so your series’ version was kept for each. If you’d rather use the other version, open that character, item, or location in your series and update it directly.

Dr. Watson — Importance: kept “Primary”, not “Secondary”
221B Baker Street — Type: kept “Residence”, not “Crime Scene”
Figure 4 - The results screen lists anything that couldn't be blended, and what was kept

Once the merge finishes, anything that couldn't be combined shows up right there on the results screen: which entry it was, which detail, and what it kept. If you'd rather have the other version, open that character, item, or location afterward and change it yourself.

Tip: Merging with Copy is the gentler path: your original book stays in the Library, so if a merged entry didn't keep something you wanted, it's still right there to reference.

Note: This is different from the shelf's Add Book to Series card, which starts a fresh, blank Book. Reach for Add to Series… in the Library when the book already exists.
