Managing Item Types
Item types define categories for your items. Customize them in Settings > Items to match your story's genre and needs.
Penpoint includes default types like Weapon, Artifact, Document, and Vehicle, but you can create custom types for any category: Evidence for mysteries, Spell Components for fantasy, Tech Gadgets for sci-fi, or anything else your story requires.
Adding Item Types
Click Add Item Type to create a new item type. Enter a name and choose an icon from the available options. Your new type appears immediately in the list and becomes available when creating items.
Note: You can have up to 50 item types per book. The button will show "(Maximum reached)" when you've hit the limit.
Tip: Choose icons that visually represent your item categories. With 60+ icons available (from swords and shields to phones and rockets), you can find something that fits most genres.
Editing Item Types
Click the edit button next to any item type to modify its name. Click the icon to change it. Changes apply immediately to all items using that type.
The icon helps you quickly identify item types at a glance in the Items page, making it easier to scan your inventory visually.
Reordering Types
Use the up and down arrow buttons to reorder your item types. The order affects how types appear in dropdown menus when creating or editing items. Put your most frequently used types at the top for quicker access.
Deleting Item Types
Click the delete button next to an item type to remove it. A confirmation dialog will warn you that any items using that type will need a new type assigned.
Note: Deleting an item type doesn't delete the items themselves; they'll remain in your project, but you'll need to assign them a different type.
Default Types
Penpoint's Standard template includes ten default item types: Personal Effects, Documents, Clothing & Accessories, Tools & Equipment, Weapons & Armor, Vehicles, Consumables, Technology, Artifacts, and Miscellaneous. Other templates include their own genre-specific types.
Feel free to modify, delete, or replace these defaults to match your story's needs.
