Interface Settings
Penpoint's interface settings let you customize the look and feel of the app to match your writing preferences. Find these settings in Settings > Themes.
Color Theme
Choose from eight color themes to find the one that's easiest on your eyes. Penpoint offers both light and dark themes:
- Parchment - A warm, cream-colored theme perfect for long writing sessions
- Linen - Clean and professional with crisp white backgrounds
- Catppuccin - A soothing pastel dark theme by the Catppuccin community
- Slate - A professional dark theme with cool tones
- Cloud - Soft grays for a neutral, modern look
- Ocean - Deep blue tones inspired by ocean depths
- Midnight - Pure black for terminal-style minimal distraction
- Matrix - Black and green for that iconic hacker aesthetic
Your theme choice applies across the entire app and persists between sessions.
Typography
Select the typeface that makes your character notes most readable. Four carefully chosen fonts cover different writing styles:
- Source Serif 4 - A classic serif font ideal for long-form writing and traditional manuscripts
- Inter - Modern sans-serif that's clean and easy to scan
- JetBrains Mono - Monospaced font designed for technical content
- Source Code Pro - Classic typewriter-style monospace for a retro writing vibe
Tip: The font you choose affects all text in Penpoint—character names, notes, descriptions, and more.
Font Size
Make text larger or smaller to suit your screen and eyesight. Use the minus and plus buttons to adjust in 10% increments, from 80% (smallest) to 150% (largest).
The visual progress bar shows your current size. Click the Reset button to return to 100% (default size) at any time.
Tip: Use Ctrl+Shift+"+" (Cmd+Shift+"+" on Mac) to increase font size, or Ctrl+Shift+"-" (Cmd+Shift+"-" on Mac) to decrease it with your keyboard.
Startup Behavior
Decide what you see when you launch Penpoint:
- Reopen my last book - Opens the book you were working on, right where you left off (default)
- Open my Book Library - Starts you on your shelf so you can pick a book. Penpoint won't reopen your last book.
Most writers prefer "Reopen my last book" for quick access to their current project. Choose "Open my Book Library" if you frequently switch between multiple books.
This applies every time Penpoint opens, including after an update restarts it. If you ever launch Penpoint and land on your Library when you expected your book, this setting is why.
Text Line Height
Adjust the vertical spacing between lines of text. Five presets cover different reading preferences:
- Single (1.0) - Tightest spacing, like a traditional manuscript
- Compact (1.08) - Slightly more breathing room for dense information
- Normal (1.15) - Comfortable spacing for everyday use (default)
- Relaxed (1.5) - Generous spacing for easier scanning
- Double (2.0) - Maximum spacing, like double-spaced drafts
Tip: Tighter spacing fits more on screen; looser spacing is easier to read. Find the balance that works for your eyes.
Spellcheck & Autocorrect
Spellcheck & Autocorrect now has its own dedicated settings page with multi-language support, a custom dictionary, autocorrect controls, and automatic entity name whitelisting. See Spellcheck & Autocorrect for full details.
Clock
Penpoint can display a clock in the header bar so you can keep track of time while writing. Click the clock to open a dropdown with quick options.
Three settings let you customize the clock:
- Show clock in header - Enable or disable the clock display. When disabled, a small clock icon remains for quick access.
- Time format - Choose between 12-hour (2:30 PM) or 24-hour (14:30) display. Defaults to your system preference.
- Show seconds - Add seconds to the clock display for a more precise readout.
Accessibility
Turn on OpenDyslexic to switch your interface and manuscript editor to a typeface designed to reduce common reading errors for people with dyslexia.
One toggle replaces both your Typography choice and any font pinned specifically for the manuscript editor. Turn it off and Penpoint remembers what you had before.
