Managing Your Subscription
Penpoint Cloud is an optional paid subscription, separate from your one-time purchase. Your books always live on your computer; the cloud is an extra copy.
The Two Plans
Penpoint Backup ($5/month or $45/year):
- An encrypted cloud copy of every book
- Unlimited version history, kept forever
- Restore any earlier draft, any time
Penpoint Sync ($10/month or $96/year):
- Includes everything in Penpoint Backup
- Up to 5 computers kept in step automatically
- The Penpoint phone app, included free
Switching to Yearly Billing
If you're paying monthly, open Settings > Penpoint Cloud and click Switch to yearly billing. Penpoint shows you the estimated charge before you confirm: it credits the days you've already paid for this month, and any tax is added on top.
- Instant, inside Penpoint: no browser, no re-entering your card.
- Switching back to monthly is not available yet.
Switching Between Backup and Sync
If you are on Penpoint Backup, you can move up to Penpoint Sync from Settings > Penpoint Cloud. You pay the difference between the two plans for the rest of the period you are in, Sync starts right away, and your renewal date does not change. Switching down from Sync to Backup isn't available in the app yet.
When switching down does become available, it will happen on the account you already have: you keep the same books, the same encryption keys, and the same Recovery Kit, so there will be nothing to move and nothing to set up again.
If you do move down to Backup, syncing will stay active until the end of the time you already paid for. After that you pick one computer as the active backup device; the others keep saving locally but stop syncing.
Card, PayPal, and Your Account
You can replace your card and update your billing address at any time, from Card and billing details. The payment method you picked at checkout stays with that subscription, so switching a card subscription to PayPal, or a PayPal subscription to a card, isn't available yet. A PayPal subscription also can't have its plan changed in the app.
Whatever changes, use the same Penpoint account throughout. There is never a reason to delete your account or make a second one.
Canceling
Click Cancel subscription in Settings > Penpoint Cloud and confirm. That's it: no browser, no phone call, no email required.
- Everything keeps working until the time you already paid for ends.
- After your subscription ends, the cloud copy is kept for 30 days. Those 30 days keep your data safe; they don't hold the plan open, because a canceled subscription can't be restarted once the paid time has run out. (A subscription that lapsed because a payment failed is the different case: update your card and it picks up again.)
- After that, the cloud copy is permanently deleted, with warning emails first. Choose a plan comes back, so starting again means a new password and a fresh upload from this computer. Your local books are unaffected.
Changed your mind while you're still inside the time you already paid for? A Resume button appears in Settings > Penpoint Cloud, the same place as Cancel subscription, and switches you straight back on. No charge: you're picking back up on time you already paid for. Once the time you already paid for has fully ended, Resume is no longer offered and the old subscription can't be restarted. Your cloud copy is kept for 30 days and then cleared. After that, Choose a plan comes back, and starting again means a new password and a fresh upload from this computer.
A subscription that ended because a payment didn't go through is the other case, and it does have a way back. Open Settings > Penpoint Cloud, click Card and billing details, and update your card. As soon as the payment goes through, the cloud copy picks up where it left off: same password, nothing to re-upload.
Note: Penpoint Cloud subscriptions, monthly or yearly, are non-refundable and not prorated. If you cancel part way through, your plan runs to the end of the time you already paid for.
What Happens If My Payment Fails
Your local books are never affected. Syncing pauses; your cloud data follows the same 30-day grace as a cancellation, then permanently deletes.
To update your payment method, open Settings > Penpoint Cloud and click Card and billing details. Unlike the other actions here, this one opens in your browser, on a secure page run by Lemon Squeezy, our payment partner. As soon as the payment goes through, the cloud copy picks up where it left off: same password, nothing to re-upload.
Penpoint itself is yours forever, one payment, and works completely offline. See Backup & Restore for local backup options that work without a subscription.
