Searching & Connecting

These are the tools that turn a big, busy book into something you can move through without thinking. Once they're second nature, you stop hunting through menus and start writing at speed: find anyone in a keystroke, link a character into your prose as you type, spin up a new location without losing your place, and see your whole cast at a glance. They work from anywhere in Penpoint, in either mode.

Find Anything, Instantly

  • Search: Press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac) from anywhere and start typing. It searches everything at once: characters, locations, items, chapters, notes, arcs, tags, and the full text of your manuscript prose, with highlighted snippets and instant results. In a series it covers every book. Recent searches and a fullscreen mode are built in.
  • Compendium: An A-to-Z index of everything in your book (characters, items, locations, chapters, and arcs) on one page. Perfect for a birds-eye view, jumping to anything by name, or catching two characters you accidentally named the same thing.

Link It All Together

  • @Mentions: Type @ anywhere on the worldbuilding side and pick a name to drop a live, clickable link to any character, place, item, chapter, note, or arc point. Mentions follow whatever they point to: rename a character and every mention updates itself. Click one to jump straight there.
  • Quick Add Menu: Press Ctrl+N (Cmd+N on Mac) to create a character, location, item, chapter, note, or tag without leaving what you're doing. If your cursor is in a writing area, Create + Mention makes the new thing and drops a link to it right where you're typing, so creating and connecting happen in one move.

Tip: The theme here is speed with no dead ends: Search takes you anywhere, @Mentions wires your world together as you write, Quick Add grows it on the fly, and the Compendium keeps the whole thing in view. Learn the two shortcuts (Ctrl+K and Ctrl+N) and the rest follows.
